Summer Professional Development for Teachers

Calling all arts educators in the tri-state!
The New Victory Theater is offering 2 professional development sessions for classroom teachers this summer. Courses run concurrently and are offered for NYCDOE professional credit for NYC public school teachers. Teachers from private, tri-state and other school settings can receive a letter of completion.

At the Summer Teacher Institute, you can expect to further develop knowledge in performing arts-making in theater and dance, build collaborative skills and translate your experiences being actors/directors and dancers/choreographers to working with your own students.

As a result of participating in these courses, you will be able to:
  • Design student driven dance-making or theater-making lesson plans and/or rehearsal plans
  • Build arts-focused assessment tools for constructive student-to-student feedback
  • Apply concrete assessment tools to performing arts lessons and units of work

Dance through hands-on activities designed to give participants practical strategies for use in student performance. Teachers will be engaged as dancers, choreographers and educators to further their knowledge and skills in dance-making, collaboration, live-performance interpretation/analysis and dance based student assessment. As a result of this course, participants will be able to develop dance-making lesson plans and/or rehearsal plans that use strategies for students to create original dance pieces for performance and presentation, such as dance presentations, concerts, musical theater productions, etc. Teachers will also utilize dance-focused tools for constructive student-to-student feedback and apply concrete assessment tools to gauge student learning, collaborative skills and leadership.

Through hands-on theater activities designed to give participants practical strategies to help contribute fully to the creative process in play making and make directorial decisions about a final performance. Teachers will be engaged as actors, directors, and educators to further their knowledge and skills in theater-making, ensemble building, live-performance interpretation/analysis and peer to peer assessment. As a result of this course, participants will be able to develop theater-making lesson plans and/or rehearsal plans that use strategies for students to create original theater pieces for production and performance. Through this process teachers will learn to give their students voice to their own original creative projects as well as theater projects that could be devised around core subject areas like social studies, language arts, science, etc. Teachers will also learn tools for constructive student-to-student feedback and apply concrete assessment tools to gauge student learning, collaborative skills and leadership.
